The Thompson Family Murders July 5, 1996 Chicago, Cook County, Illinois

Updated: Apr 28, 2020

Thompson Family

Everett Sr, Lydia Everett, Everett Jr., Andrew Thompson

July 5, 1996

Chatham neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois

The Thompson family was that of Everett Thompson, his wife Lydia, Everett Jr, 11, and Andrew, 8 who lived in a home which Lydia inherited from her mother on the 8100 block of South Rhodes Avenue the Chatham neighborhood of Chicago. They owned a pizzeria, ‘Eat Co Pizza’ on Lawrence Avenue and 71st Street in Chicago.

Reports show that Everett Sr’s father spoke to him in July 1996 on the phone while Everett was at the restaurant. He put his dad on hold to answer his wife’s phone call, to hear that her brother was at the house chasing her with an ax. She had locked herself in the room to call her husband and waited for him to come home. He told his father what had happened and he abruptly left to see what was happening at home. Everett’s father never spoke or heard from him again.

She had made a 911 call at this time and reported her brother was threatening her with an ax. Two days later, the family disappeared.

Lydia’s brother Kevin White reportedly was in and out of jail and prison with records that included sexual assaults to women and burglary.

An employee there stated that Everett Sr. left the restaurant approximately 3:00 P.M. on July 5th saying he was going to pick up his wife. The brother came in later about 5:00 P.M. in the Thompson van saying that Everett Sr. was arrested over a traffic accident. That never happened. He reportedly had red smears on his new white Nike gym shoes. Since then he had allegedly told different people, several different accounts of the Thompson family whereabouts.

Kevin White was being suspected of bank fraud. It seemed as though he forged Lydia’s signature and another siblings to get his share of the property. A check was made at over thirteen thousand dollars for Kevin to collect. He was charged with bank fraud and it is believed that murdering Lydia and her family was part of his scheme.

Everett Sr’s family reported the Thompson family missing when they hadn’t heard from them. When Detectives spoke to Kevin, he acted like he didn’t know anything and just stated that they left town in a car or a bus to Pennsylvania or Minnesota.

Law enforcement believes he “ax-murdered” his sister and her entire family. A pair of blood-stained men’s gym shoes and a blood soaked child’s sock were found. An investigation inside the Thompson residence showed that the kitchen floor had been torn out and that a toilet and bathtub had been painted red. Before their disappearance however, the night of the 911 call, a police officer did enter the home and found that kitchen floor intact, and the bathroom toilet and bathtub were not red.

Later, the brother in law sold the house and moved in to a trailer in Gary, Indiana. Inside that trailer, law enforcement found a child’s sock and a pair of men’s gym shoes in the crawl space. Both were positive for human blood.

In 1997 Kevin White seemed to have committed suicide in his jail cell at the Federal Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago on Christmas morning. He was hung from the bedsheet tied to an overhead fire sprinkler about 4:00 A.M.

No one has ever been charged with the Thompson family murders. Kevin White was the primary and only suspect. None of the families bodies have been located. Kevin White never left a letter and there is no indication where the Thompson family may be concealed.
